The Vince Staples Show Announced at Netflix

Vince Staples will star in a new scripted comedy series for Netflix, Deadline and Variety report. The Vince Staples Show is a fictional TV series loosely inspired Staples’ upbringing in Long Beach, California and is altogether separate from the web series of the same name that he launched in August 2019. The new series is co-executive produced by Staples and writer, director, and actor Kenya Barris (Black-ish, #blackAF, Entergalactic), along with Ian Edelman, Maurice Williams, Corey Smyth and Calmatic. Barris will also act in the series.

“I am excited to partner with Netflix and Kenya Barris on The Vince Staples Show,” the rapper shared in a statement with Variety. “This has been something I have been developing for some time and I am happy it’s coming to fruition.” (A Netflix show with Staples was, in fact, mentioned in a GQ profile of the rapper last year.)

The Vince Staples Show follows other acting roles for the Big Fish Theory rapper, including the 2018 indie film Punk and the 2015 movie Dope, where he appeared alongside A$AP Rocky. He also voiced the character Vinz in the 2018 anime MFKZ and made a guest appearance on the HBO television series Insecure.

“It’s our mission to work with the best artists in the world,” Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s head of comedy, shared in a statement with Variety. “Vince has already established himself as one of the most talented young musicians today and we’re really excited about how his sensibility—and sense of humor—will translate into a unique comedy series.”

Vince Staples’ latest album, Ramona Park Broke My Heart, was released in April. The rapper’s fifth studio album featured the singles “Rose Street” and “Magic” (with Mustard), and followed recent guest features on Raveena’s “Secret” and Kilo Kish’s “New Tricks: Art, Aesthetics, and Money.”

See why Romana Park Broke My Heart was included on Pitchfork’s list of “The 39 Best Albums of 2022: Our Favorite Music if the Year So Far.”
